The “Appropriateness” of Religious Welfare from Lebanese Christian Churches

Abstract Since 2011, more than a million Syrians have fled to Lebanon. Standing close the Syrian border, welfare departments of Eastern Christian bishoprics in Zahle are at forefront humanitarian response. Through comparison Maronite, Greek Catholic and Syriac Orthodox Churches, I argue that these faith-based organisations ( fbo s) implement an “appropriate” mode reasoning design their aid strategies which challenges rational assumptions. This article reveals “national” or “diasporic” character Lebanese s matters capacity determining Church’s policy care times crisis. These examples illustrate present rare adaptiveness beneficiaries’ needs, notably by relying on transnational diasporic support. Overall, this research demonstrates essential actors addressing situations forced displacements, but it also emphasises importance considering each ’s identity understand mechanisms solidarity.
